Today I am going to....

  • learn a lot
  • be creative
  • gain independence
  • be active
  • have fun
  • and still want to discover more!

At GES the children in our two Reception classes (Owls and Robins) follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which comprises seven key areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We operate this through an active learning system. It is a ‘plan, do and review’ framework achieved through play where children and teachers plan, work and review together, providing opportunities for developing a range of social and intellectual skills.

The framework that we provide can be adapted to meet the specific needs of a child or a class. It ensures children have some control over their own learning, and access to materials and equipment that they may require. Children are required to make a decision about what they would like to choose to fit into their day.

Each half term we plan exciting and stimulating activities based on the children’s interests, learning and development. We also believe strongly in maintaining the flexibility to respond to whatever may interest a child, allowing time and space for our children to be children. We encouragetheir sense of awe and wonder at the natural world; discovering an insect, looking ata rainbow, or watching the snow melting.

French vocabulary is discovered through play and activities that have been previously taught in English in order to support children’s understanding, and engage them in learning an additional language through meaningful ways. Art, dance and drama are taught by specialist teachers who respond to the needs and interests of the children. All children are offered ballet lessons as part of their EYFS curriculum.

Most importantly, we want each individual child to feel safe and confident in order to become happy, stimulated children who have a passion for learning.
